Frequently asked questions

Which light type suits my application?

Ring lights are the universal starting point, dome lights remove reflections on shiny parts, backlights create sharp silhouettes for measurement and bar lights cover large or elongated areas.

Which color should the light be?

Red is standard for mono cameras, white for color imaging, and blue or UV help with specific materials and contrast requirements.

Do I need a dedicated light controller?

For constant lighting a suitable power supply is enough; strobing and precise trigger synchronization require a lighting controller.

More questions about machine vision lighting

How do I deal with ambient light?

Combine a short exposure time with a bright strobed light so the flash dominates the scene, and add a bandpass filter on the lens that matches the light color. Mechanical shrouds help in extreme cases.

What is strobe or overdrive mode?

The light fires short, overdriven pulses synchronized with the camera exposure. This delivers several times the continuous brightness, reduces heat, extends LED lifetime and freezes fast motion.

How do I size a backlight?

The illuminated area should be larger than the part plus its positioning tolerance, so the silhouette always sits on a uniformly bright background. For precise edge measurement, allow a generous margin and mount the part close to the backlight surface.
